Oisin Murphy Crowned Champion Jockey for the Fourth Time!
Oisin Murphy has been crowned the 2024 Champion Flat Jockey for the fourth time at QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot last Saturday, marking yet another triumph in his illustrious career. With an impressive 162 wins to his name this season, the 29-year-old jockey has secured an unassailable lead, making this victory all the more special.
Murphy’s journey to this title has been nothing short of extraordinary. He first burst onto the scene in 2013, winning four races on Ayr Gold Cup Day, and the following year, he was crowned Champion Apprentice. Fast forward to 2019, and Murphy claimed his first Champion Jockey title, followed by successive wins in 2020 and 2021. This season, running from 4th May to 19th October, Oisin has once again proven his mettle, with standout performances that have made him the undisputed leader of the Flat Jockeys’ Championship.
Speaking about his fourth title, Murphy said, “I feel much more appreciative winning this Championship as I am now older, so it means much more to me. I am thankful to many people who have helped me in achieving the title for the fourth time.” He also credited his agent, Gavin Horne, and his uncle Jim for guiding his career, acknowledging the importance of those who have supported him throughout the years.
One of the season’s highlights for Murphy was winning the Summer Stakes on New Century in Canada. “I used to ride his sire, and I have had success on his half-brother. I have ridden him a lot at home, so seeing his career start gave me great pleasure,” he shared.
Murphy’s success hasn’t been limited to major international races. Last week, Chelmsford City Racecourse had the pleasure of seeing Oisin in action. Racing at Chelmsford, Murphy claimed another victory, showcasing the skill and determination that have made him a four-time champion. It was a fantastic sight to see him on the track, reaffirming his place at the top of the sport.
In reflecting on the season, Murphy has overtaken legendary jockey Frankie Dettori, who claimed the Champion Jockey title three times during his illustrious career in Britain. Murphy’s closest challengers this year have been Rossa Ryan, Tom Marquand, William Buick, and Billy Loughnane, but none could match his consistency and drive. He established a commanding lead just a month into the season and never looked back.
Looking ahead to next season and the potential for a fifth Championship, Oisin remains cautiously optimistic. “It’s not something you just fall into,” he explained. “If you want to win a Championship, you have to have intent and be committed, it doesn’t just occur.”
Murphy’s accomplishments extend well beyond his British titles. His first Royal Ascot victory in 2017 in the Hampton Court Stakes, his 2019 Royal Ascot four-timer, and victories at the prestigious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe meeting are just a few of the highlights from his career.
It’s clear that Oisin’s hunger for success remains as strong as ever. Whether racing at Ascot, Chelmsford, or internationally, Murphy continues to set the standard, and his future in the sport looks as bright as ever.
