Irish Raider Strikes in Style on Good Friday
In a stunning display, May Night galloped to victory at Chelmsford City Racecourse on Good Friday, claiming the top prize in the fiercely contested Download The bet365 App Handicap. The race which presented a strong lineup of 15 contenders, saw May Night emerge victorious having taken a keen lead at beginning of the race and cruising to secure £17,351 of the £33,150 prize money.
Keithen Kennedy, only 17, secured his first UK win in remarkable fashion. Having only celebrated his inaugural victory in Ireland last October, the apprentice led May Night all the way to an impressive victory, showcasing his skill and determination. The triumph over 7 furlongs also highlighted the vital role of Denis Gerard Hogan, May Night’s trainer, whose strategic planning prepared a top contender for lucrative success.
The victory was not just a win but marked the first time an Irish horse has won at Chelmsford City Racecourse since 2021. May Night was one of three Irish horses competing on the day, out of an initial entry of eleven horses from Ireland. This strong representation from Ireland at the Chelmsford City underscores the international appeal and competitive nature of Chelmsford City’s racing as it continues to raise its profile on the international stage.
May Night’s triumph was celebrated by racegoers, and the excitement of an international winner underscoring the importance of international competition and the strong connections between the racing communities in Ireland and the UK.
“Chelmsford City Racecourse is becoming an increasingly attractive venue for International runners.” Adrian Beaumont from the International Racing Bureau highlighted. “Chelmsford is proving popular with the Irish given its good prize-money, it’s warm welcome for international visitors and it is easy for connections to visit as it is only 20 minutes from Stansted Airport.” added Beaumont, who has played a key role in promoting Chelmsford City’s growing appeal to international competitors.
The Cardinal Conditions Stakes, which forms the final leg of the European Road to the Kentucky Derby, takes place at Chelmsford City this Saturday and has also attracted four entries from Ireland. Aidan O’Brein has put forward Group runner ups Capulet and Gasper De Lemos to represent team Ballydoyle, while Joseph O’Brien’s Group 3 winner Atlantic Coast and Jack Davison’s Bergamasco, who has three-time Dundalk winner are other potential contenders.
