George Boughey Targeting Back-to-back Victories in the Chelmer Stakes
The Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Chelmer Stakes at Chelmsford City Racecourse is set to showcase a competitive line-up of 12 competitors in the racecourse’s most valuable sprint of the year.
Soprano, rated 101, makes her season debut and is set to participate in her sixth black type contest. The filly carries the hopes of last year’s winning partnership of trainer George Boughey and Highclere Racing who are fresh from competing in Hong Kong with 2023’s Chelmer Stakes winner, Believing, in the Chairman’s Cup at Sha Tin on Sunday. They will be keen to replicate last year’s success at Chelmsford, this time with champion apprentice Billy Loughnane on board.
Roger Varian’s Jabaara also holds a rating of 101, and held her own when finishing sixth in the Group 1 Cheveley Stakes at the end of last season. She is expected to be a strong contender with Classic-winning jockey James Doyle in the saddle.
Chelmsford City is enjoying its most successful year for attracting international runners with Thursday’s race including two more vying for the lucrative pot and black type status. Irish raider Miss Black Jack trained by John S. O’Donoghue adds depth to the field whilst also amongst them is Tazara, who recently broke her maiden in Deauville. The filly marks Chelmsford City’s first French runner of the year representing multi-Group 1 winning trainer Christophe Ferland and will be ridden by last year’s Queen Charlotte Stakes winner, Kieran Shoemark.
Other leading contenders are Andrew Balding’s royal runner Works Of Art and Ralph Beckett’s Queen Of Mougins who finished fourth behind Soprano in the Group 3 Dick Poole Fillies’ Stakes in her second second-ever race following her convincing winning debut at Newbury last August.
The Chelmer Stakes continues to be a pivotal event in Chelmsford City’s racing calendar, drawing top talent from across Europe. This year’s race not only features seasoned competitors but also promising new talent, all competing in what is expected to be a dynamic and unforgettable showdown.
