Chelmsford City Racecourse Increases Support to Retired Racehorses

Chelmsford City Racecourse is proud to announce its enhanced commitment to the welfare of retired racehorses through increased contributions to Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), the British horseracing industry’s official charity for the welfare of horses who have retired from racing.
Effective from January 1, 2025, Chelmsford City Racecourse, along with all 59 British racecourses, has agreed to raise its contribution to RoR from £100 to £270 per fixture—a 170% increase. This collective effort underscores the industry’s dedication to the aftercare and retraining of former racehorses.
The additional funding will directly support RoR’s initiatives, as outlined in their 2024-2026 strategy, ensuring that former racehorses successfully transition to new careers and continue to receive the care they deserve.
Neil Graham, Racing Director at Chelmsford City Racecourse, commented: “We’re delighted to support the major uplift in funding for Retraining of Racehorses and fully recognise the excellent work they do. At Chelmsford City Racecourse, we believe equine welfare extends far beyond the raceday itself, and we are committed to ensuring our equine athletes receive the highest level of care throughout their lives. We’re proud to play a part in helping RoR achieve the important goals outlined in their strategy.”
David Catlow, Managing Director of RoR, stated, “The increased contributions from British racecourses to RoR is a monumental step forward for the aftercare of former racehorses. This increase reflects the racing industry’s growing recognition of the responsibility it holds to its horses, not just during their careers, but for the rest of their lives.“
Chelmsford City Racecourse is honoured to be part of this significant initiative, reaffirming its commitment to the horses that have contributed to the sport’s rich history.
