Chelmsford City Racecourse is the UK’s newest racecourse and continues to find ways to innovate and improve. With consistent investment in our facilities and quality of our racing, we are proud to be at the forefront, never afraid to learn and never afraid to go to explore new things.
In December 2017, Chelmsford City Racecourse broke ground on its new turf racecourse. A long held ambition of the racecourse, the vision was to establish the first turf racing under floodlights in the UK and just the second in Europe.
Inspired by the desire to stage Breeders Cup style meetings in the UK, Chelmsford City Racecourse has invested more than £1.5m into this project, a testament to its unwavering commitment to producing the best racing and investing in British racing.
The development of the turf course has been a huge engineering project requiring nearly 30,000 tonnes of material including topsoil and sand forming multiple base layers. Processes such as extensive de-compacting, de-stoning, soil conditioning operation and verti-draining as well as the use of high quality soil and seed has led to excellent growth and root depth producing one of the finest surfaces in Europe.
The racecourse has also invested substantially in profiling the land adjacent to the new turf which is scheduled to come into fruition in the spring of 2022.
What will be a landmark moment for British racing, the turf at Chelmsford City Racecourse continues to be successfully developed and we are excited to hopefully unveil our turf track from 2022.
The racecourse is delighted to announce that it is also making substantial investments into enhancing the hospitality experience of its racegoers. On Friday 11th February, our popular Fairwood Restaurant will reopen after an extensive renovation.
The Fairwood will continue to offer its famous carvery throughout the winter months with even more to enjoy on top of it and transitioning to a grand and expanded summer buffet in the summer.
The restaurant is situated on the ground floor of the Grandstand along the final furlong of home straight and boasts the best views of the winning line from its private terrace.
