What time do gates open?

Gates open at different times, depending on the time of the first race for each event. Please note that the times listed below may be subject to slight change, so please ensure you check the website or pre-racing email for the confirmed timings. 

31st August - Gates open: 3.40pm

Do the bars accept card?

Our 2019 concerts are predominantly operating a cashless system. All external bars and food concessions will be operating using RFID wristbands. Betting will remain available with cash or card.

Wristbands with RFID chips will be issued on arrival to the course.

What time do the band start & finish?

The first act will begin at around half an hour after the final race of the day.

For Ministry of Sound Annual Classical the concert will begin at around 9.15pm and will last for approximately 90 minutes. The aftershow party (accessible by ticket only) will finish at 1am.

Can we bring food & drink into the venue?

No external food or drink is permitted to be brought into the venue. If you have a specific dietary requirement which cannot be satisfied by the on-course caterers, permission to bring alternative provisions into the course requires written confirmation from the racecourse.
You can bring a small bottle of un-opened water into the venue - if it has been opened it will be confiscated.
Is there a welfare tent on site?

Yes, we have a welfare tent on site. They will also have tap water for all guests, free of charge. You can also get water free of charge from all the bars.

What time does racing start?

The first race time is dependent on the date of racing and can be subject to change prior to the event. Please check the pre-racing email which is sent to all ticket purchasers prior to the event for the confirmed timings.

What are the security restrictions in place at this concert?

Please note the below is not an exhaustive list.
- Everyone attending the event is likely to be subject to a search; this may include pat-downs and/or metal detector checks, and some people may be asked to take part in enhanced searches. In the unlikely event you refuse to take part in a search, you will not be admitted.

- Please do not bring any aerosols on site - these will set off the metal detectors on arrival. The aerosols will be confiscated for safety reasons.

- Illegal weapons & drugs are not permitted by law and will be confiscated. Anyone in possession of such items will be detained by the police. There will be specialist detection dogs in attendance.

What is the accessibility like at the Racecourse?

We have a designated accessibility page on website -

The racecourse is fully accessible, however some of the facilities are located in a green field area with some tarmac paths, located in the centre of the racecourse. While there are some sheltered areas, this is mainly an open air venue. There is an area for accessible viewing of the racing.

Weather & ground conditions may be variable in times of extreme weather, and mobility around the site may become more difficult.

Can I bring children to this event?

No children’s ticket pricing is available on this day. Under 18s may attend at the standard adult prices, but the event is not suitable for younger children.

Which areas can I access with my ticket?

All admission tickets will allow you access to the racing as well as the post-racing concert

Standard Admission tickets are GROUNDS ONLY. This means those with this type of ticket cannot gain access to the Sports Bar or any other area in the Hospitality Grandstand. There will be numerous concession stands serving food & drink around the course on the day.

Grandstand Access tickets give you access into the Grandstand and Sports Bar as well as standard admission access for the day. Gold Enclosure tickets give access to premium concert viewing for the music after racing and all bars/concessions within this area. 

Club Restaurant, Fairwood Restaurant & Summer Marquee tickets give Gold Enclosure access and premium viewing for the music after racing as well as access into those specific hospitality areas and the Grandstand throughout the afternoon and the aftershow party too.

Is there a dress code?

Hospitality areas (including Club, Fairwood, Summer Marquee) - Gentlemen are required to wear a collared shirt and jacket/blazer. Smart jeans are allowed (no rips). No shorts, flip-flops or sports attire is permitted. A code of conduct will also be in operation in these areas.

Standard Admission (Grounds Only) & Grandstand Entry - No sports clothing or flip flops. Tailored shorts are permitted

What happens in the case of inclement weather?

This is an outdoor venue with an all-weather racing surface and this will enable the event to go ahead even if it rains! Please dress accordingly; unfortunately the Great British weather is beyond our control (although the sun always shines at Chelmsford City!). Are there any hospitality/restaurant options available?

All hospitality is sold out for our concert events. 

What food options are available in the venue?

We have a number of different food concessions on course and there will be dairy free, gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options available. Guests with specific dietary requirements not covered in this list are requested to contact the racecourse by email to with their specific request. 

Is parking available on site?

Parking is available to all guests and is included in your ticket price. Details of where to park is included in your ticket email/letter.

The car parks may be located some way from the actual venue, so please make sure when leaving your car you have brought all your valuable items with you, and you have your tickets.

Can we take a taxi?

Yes. Taxi pick-up and drop-off points are located in the BLUE car park. There is no taxi rank at the venue, so all taxis must be pre-booked.

Can I leave my car overnight?

You may leave your car overnight, however this is entirely at the owner’s risk. Cars may be collected between 9am-12noon on the day following the event.

What’s the closest train station?

The closest train station is Braintree, however trains run more frequently to Chelmsford. There is no bus that runs directly to the Racecourse. We recommend pre-booking a taxi.

Are there any hotels nearby?

Chelmsford City Racecourse is positioned in an ideal spot between Braintree and Chelmsford, near the town of Great Leighs. There are various accommodation options available.

Is there a bus running from Great Leighs?

There is no shuttle bus running for these events.

Is there pedestrian access to the racecourse?

For the safety of our guests, there is NO pedestrian access to the venue, with the exception of the designated routes from the car parking areas and from Great Leighs Village via the Dog & Partridge Underpass.

Can I bring a chair?

Small folding camping chairs are permitted into the course, however the use and positioning of these will be at the discretion of the security team on the day.

Can we bring a picnic blanket to sit on through the day or is there plenty of seating about?

You are allowed to bring in a picnic blanket, but no food or drink is permitted to be brought into the site.

There will be seating around the Racecourse.

Are there any lockers available?

No - we do not have lockers available for use.
